Contains 1 test.
The test is a manual, qualitative, immunochromatographic (lateral flow), screening self-test for the detection of anti-tissue transglutaminase Immunoglobulin A (anti-tTG IgA) type antibodies in a finger prick whole blood sample. The test is designed for use at home by members of the public to screen for coeliac disease.
General information
Coeliac disease is a long-term autoimmune disorder affecting the small intestine that can occur in genetically predisposed people. It is caused by a permanent intolerance to gluten, a complex mixture of proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. It is estimated to affect 1% of people worldwide. Typical symptoms can include chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, wind and weight loss but also anaemia, osteoporosis, extreme fatigue and even delayed growth in affected children.
Currently, the only treatment for coeliac disease after being diagnosed by your doctor, is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet, and highly accurate blood tests are the first-line screening method to detect coeliac disease. They are mainly based on the detection of anti-tissue-transglutaminase (t-TG) IgA type antibodies.
Time to result
The test gives a result in 15 minutes at home.
Warnings
A screening test for a single biomarker, such as anti-tTG IgA, is not a diagnosis.
Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result.
Do not change your medication, diet or lifestyle solely on the basis of a self-test - always discuss your result with an appropriate healthcare professional first.
- Not suitable for children under 6 years of age
- You must be on a normal gluten containing diet for at least 6 weeks before starting the test
- Do not start a gluten free diet until you have been diagnosed by your doctor
- The test may give a false negative result if you are IgA antibody deficient
Accuracy
This test has a cut-off of 10 U/mL of anti-tTG IgA for a positive result. The test has an overall agreement of 96.7% (91.4-99.2*), sensitivity of 97.2% and specificity of 96% with laboratory tests for tTG IgA. Although this test is reliable for the detection of anti-tTG IgA antibodies, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.
IMPORTANT: These figures refer to the agreement of the SELFCHECK test with laboratory anti-tTG IgA tests, and not to the accuracy of tests for the diagnosis of coeliac disease.
