Whether positive or negative, a self-test result is a starting point for a conversation about your symptoms with your doctor. Self-testing provides a preliminary screen of physiological biomarker levels, but is not a diagnosis. Always speak with your doctor if you are concerned about your symptoms or anxious about your health.

Contains 1 test.

This test is a specific, manual, qualitative, immunochromatographic (lateral flow), screening test for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis from a vaginal swab.

General information

This is a preliminary screening test for women and is not intended for definitive diagnosis of a Chlamydia infection. The test requires cell samples from the neck of the uterus collected with a sterile vaginal swab.

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It's passed on through unprotected sex (sex without a condom) and is particularly common in sexually active teenagers and young adults. Symptoms may include pain when peeing, an unusual discharge from the vagina or bottom, pain in the tummy, bleeding after sex and bleeding between periods.

Time to result

The test gives a result in 20 minutes at home.

Warnings

A screening test for a single biomarker, such as the immunological detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, is not a diagnosis. Whether you have a positive or negative result, if you are concerned that you are at risk from sexually transmitted diseases, always speak with your doctor.

Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result.

It is important that the test is performed at least one hour after urination. Only the components supplied with the test kit should be used.

Do not use the test:

  • during pregnancy
  • during, or within 3 days of the end of your period
  • within 14 days of completing a course of antibiotics

Although this test is a reliable way to check for the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis antigens, all medical tests whether used in the laboratory or at home may give false positive or false negative results.

The test should not be used during pregnancy or menstruation, for three days after the end of menstruation, or if there is a urinary tract infection.

Accuracy

This test has a cut-off equivalent to 250 elementary bodies/µL for a positive result, a sensitivity of 85.7% and specificity of 98.3% (sample size of 596 participants) with laboratory PCR tests. Although this test is reliable for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis antigens, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.

IMPORTANT: These figures refer to the agreement of the SELFCHECK test with laboratory PCR tests, and not to the accuracy of tests for the diagnosis of Chlamydia infections.

Further information

If you're a woman, sexually active and under 25, it is recommended that you have a chlamydia test once a year, and when you have sex with new or casual partners. Further information is available on the NHS website.

Important to know

All SELFCHECK medical tests are CE certified according to UK and EU regulations, and registered with MHRA as self-testing devices.

Our tests are based on the same principles used by hospital labs, and provide reliable, meaningful results, but self-testing is not meant to replace established NHS healthcare pathways. Always consider what a positive or negative result will mean to you before testing, and be aware of the limitations of the test you are using.

If you have symptoms that concern you, or are anxious about your health, always speak with your pharmacist or doctor.
