This test is a specific, manual, qualitative, immunochromatographic (lateral flow), screening test for the detection of anti-Treponema pallidum (anti-TP) antibodies in a finger-prick whole blood sample.
General information
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum (TP). The detection of anti-TP antibodies in the blood can be an indicator of infection.
Time to result
The test gives a result in 10 minutes at home.
Warnings
A screening test for a single biomarker, such as anti-TP antibodies, is not a diagnosis. Whether you have a positive or negative result, if you are concerned that you are at risk from sexually transmitted diseases, always speak with your doctor.
Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result.
Although this test is a reliable way to check for the presence of anti-TP antibodies, all medical tests whether used in the laboratory or at home may give false positive or false negative results.
You could get a positive result if you have previously had, or are currently receiving treatment, for syphilis.
Accuracy
This test has a cut-off of 0.1 IU/mL for a positive result, and has an overall agreement of 97.55% (96.1 - 98.3*), sensitivity of 82.93% and specificity of 98.47% with laboratory anti-TP antibody tests. Although this test is reliable for the detection of anti-TP antibodies, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.
IMPORTANT: These figures refer to the agreement of the SELFCHECK test with laboratory anti-TP antibody blood tests, and not to the accuracy of tests for the diagnosis of syphilis.
