Liver disease is almost entirely preventable, with the major risk factors being alcohol, obesity and hepatitis.
The SELFCHECK Liver Health Test is a simple and reliable self-test kit to detect raised levels of liver enzymes (AST and ALT), requiring a small finger prick blood sample to perform the test and a visual result is available in less than 10 minutes.
The liver is the body’s second-largest organ and plays a vital role in maintaining good health;
- Removes toxins, such as drugs and alcohol from the body
- Produces bile which helps with the digestion of fats
- Helps to fight infections
- Controls cholesterol levels
Liver disease typically does not cause noticeable symptoms until it has progressed significantly and the liver has sustained damage. At this stage, symptoms may include loss of appetite, weight loss, and jaundice.
Some of the most common blood tests for liver function include the transaminase enzymes aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), which are released by the liver when it is damaged.
Although ALT is found mainly in the liver, AST is less specific, as it can also be present in heart muscle and other tissues.
Contains 1 test.

We want you to be aware that no biomarker, even when checked by your hospital lab, is 100% perfect at diagnosing a specific medical condition. Because of this, a false positive result may cause unnecessary worry and further investigations, whilst a false negative result may give you peace of mind, when actually there may be an underlying condition that requires treatment. Rather than purchasing a self-test kit, you may wish to speak with your NHS GP first, who can arrange for tests if needed.
Make sure that you have considered what a result will mean to you before deciding to test. At SELFCHECK, you can also speak with our health check experts if you need help to use your test or interpret your results.
