Whether positive or negative, a self-test result is a starting point for a conversation about your symptoms with your doctor. Self-testing provides a preliminary screen of physiological biomarker levels, but is not a diagnosis. Always speak with your doctor if you are concerned about your symptoms or anxious about your health.

This test is a rapid home test for the detection of raised levels (>25mlU/ml) of human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. To detect hCG early on in pregnancy, such as from the first day of your missed period, you should use a urine sample from first thing in the morning.

General information

When you become pregnant, your body begins to produce a hormone (hCG) which is released into the blood stream and excreted in the urine. The concentration of hCG rises rapidly during the first few months of your pregnancy. The SELFCHECK Pregnancy Urine Test uses a pair of monoclonal antibodies for the specific detection of hCG in urine and gives a positive result once the level of hCG in the urine is higher than 25mlU/mL, as determined against the World Health Organisation (WHO) reference material.

You can use your pregnancy test any time of the day or night but in the case of very early pregnancy (8 to 10 days after conception) it is recommended to use the first urine sample of the day.

You can use the test as soon as your period is one day late.

Time to result

The test gives a result in 5 minutes at home.

Warnings

A screening test for a single biomarker, such as hCG, is not a diagnosis.

Do not change your medication, diet or lifestyle solely on the basis of a self-test - always discuss your result with an appropriate healthcare professional first.

Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result.

A high fluid intake can dilute the levels of hCG in your urine making detection more difficult - a normal fluid intake is therefore recommended.

Certain drugs that contain hCG such as Pregnyl, Porfasi or Pergonal and rare medical conditions can cause detectable levels of hCG in your urine even if you are not pregnant. Alcohol, pain killers, antibiotics, birth control pills, hormone therapies containing clomiphene citrate (such as Clomid, Serophen) should not affect your test result.

If you get a negative result, the level of hCG in your urine sample is too low to be detectable and it is unlikely that you are pregnant. However, you may have miscalculated when your period was due, especially if you have irregular periods. If your period does not start within a week, repeat the test. If you still get a negative result and your period has not started, you should speak with your doctor.

The test may give a false positive result if you have had a miscarriage, abortion or have given birth within the previous 8 weeks. This is because the test will detect hCG that is still in your body.

Accuracy

This test has a cut-off of 25 mIU/mL of hCG for a positive result, and is calibrated to WHO 99/688 international standard. The test has an overall agreement of 99%, sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 98.33% with laboratory hCG tests. Although this test is reliable for the detection of hCG in urine, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.

IMPORTANT: These figures refer to the agreement of the SELFCHECK test with laboratory hCG urine tests, and not to the accuracy of tests for the diagnosis of pregnancy.

Important to know

All SELFCHECK medical tests are CE certified according to UK and EU regulations, and registered with MHRA as self-testing devices.

Our tests are based on the same principles used by hospital labs, and provide reliable, meaningful results, but self-testing is not meant to replace established NHS healthcare pathways. Always consider what a positive or negative result will mean to you before testing, and be aware of the limitations of the test you are using.

If you have symptoms that concern you, or are anxious about your health, always speak with your pharmacist or doctor.
